Step by Step, Ball by Ball: The Key to Success
As many of you may know, I am a die-hard cricket fan, with my favorite format being Test cricket. There are numerous reasons for this preference, with one of the most significant being the mental aspect of the game. Test cricket truly pushes one's mental strength to its limits. It not only tests the skill to play shots but also one's patience, endurance, temperament, concentration, and fitness. (Just like UPSC!)
During the previous India tour of Australia( 2020-2021), particularly the Third Test at Sydney (SCG), which stands out to me more than the comebacks at Melbourne or the Gabba heroic, India was six down, and more than 40 overs were left to see it off so that India could draw this test. India's last recognized batsman, Hanuma Vihari, was injured and couldn't even walk. Yet, he stood there for hours alongside Ravi Ashwin just to secure India's position. I remember counting more than 200 balls backward, ensuring India's safety 😅. What they did was focus on each ball. They didn't dwell on the final outcome. Instead, they faced each ball, and eventually, they turned the tables, securing a draw at the SCG.
If you have heard about the Headingley Test when Ben Stokes pulled off the impossible to win a test against Australia, you know how much mental capacity Stokes had to pull off something like that. Remember, he is someone who suffers from mental illness. Yet, he made that match the greatest Test of all time. How? He wasn’t thinking about victory; he focused on each ball, and eventually, he became the national hero of England.
India's Test greats Sachin and Rahul Dravid have also emphasized the importance of concentration and playing each ball on its merit throughout their careers. You all know the big innings they had played across the globe.
What I'm trying to convey is that I understand many of you may be under stress, primarily due to dissatisfaction with your studies or poor performance in the mocks you've attended. You worry about what happens on the D-Day, or what you'll do if you fail, what friends might think, or what your family will say. However, what you should do is focus on the present. Focus on each day and prepare well.
UPSC has a wide syllabus, and we have ample time to prepare, which can make it seem tricky. You should utilize each day productively to reach your goal. Therefore, the focus should be on each day. Make sure that you treat every day well, and these good days will eventually bring results. Overemphasizing the final outcome instead of focusing on daily tasks can be detrimental and may lead to demotivation. It's essential to remember that success is achieved through consistent effort over time. By staying focused on the smaller tasks at hand and avoiding excessive worry about the end result, you can maintain motivation and progress steadily toward your goals. Keep in mind that achieving success is a long game, so maintaining focus and perseverance is key.
This is not a university exam, akin to 20-20 cricket, where you can study overnight and pass it, like Rinku Singh hitting 5 sixes in the final over to win an IPL game for Kolkata. This is UPSC, a long battle like Test Cricket where qualities like perseverance, patience, discipline, dedication, and consistency hold more weight than mere intelligence.
